Data usage
The Scottish Government has published these data as Environmental Information on the energy performance of buildings in Scotland. Publication is intended to contribute to delivering the Scottish Government’s policies to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide data to facilitate improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings through research, improved management, and innovation.
Non-Address Data
All data fields other than the address and postCode data exposed by this service are licensed under the Open Government Licence.
Address Data

Royal Mail Copyright Notice
These data include post town and postCodes in which intellectual property rights are owned by Royal Mail Group Limited (‘address data’). The Scottish Government has published the address data with the consent of Royal Mail Group Limited, which reserves all its copyright, database rights, trade marks and other intellectual property rights.
Royal Mail Group Limited permits the use of ‘address data’ for specific purposes related to the energy performance of buildings which are as follows:
- The effective management of properties in the private or public sector with a view to promoting energy efficiency (through consideration of factors such as patterns of use, maintenance, repairs, improvements and upgrades of building structure or energy using systems).
- Research to provide data, analysis and statistics intended to improve the understanding of energy efficiency of buildings or to facilitate innovation and improvement in use, design, materials, and equipment to this end.
- Research into the effectiveness or impact of energy efficiency improvements including those delivered through Government or other energy improvement programmes.
- Promoting and marketing energy efficiency improvements that may be made through a Government energy efficiency programme or initiative.
- Promotion and better understanding of the current energy efficiency of buildings and potential improvement in the building sale or rental markets and/or by building occupiers or users.
- To enable enforcement authorities to carry out enforcement duties as required by The Energy Performance of Buildings (Scotland) Regulations 2008, as amended.
- By local authorities in the exercise of their duties under the Building (Scotland) Act 2003.
- For the prevention or detection of crime, the apprehension or prosecution of alleged offenders, any proceedings in a court or tribunal or complying with an order of a court or a tribunal.
In addition to the purposes set out above there are certain exceptions to copyright relating to Royal Mail postal information which permit you to use copyrighted material for specific and limited purposes. These include non-commercial research and private study, subject to compliance with certain conditions. Cookies
We use cookies for user session management. These cookies do not store personally identifiable information and are not forwarded to third parties.
Information we collect and why we have it
The following information is collected, processed and stored from people visiting the website:
- Email addresses of users who have signed up and created an API key. API keys are associated to email addresses, which are stored securely in our self-hosted database. We will use your email address to give you (as a registered user) advanced warning of any changes to the published data or the functionality of the service. We may also use it for optional user feedback surveys. Deleting all API keys associated to an email will remove your email from our systems.
- Feedback and support requests that people leave, including email addresses. Your emails will go to our Gmail mailbox (see their privacy policy) and will never be forwarded to any third party. Correspondence emails are stored until they are asked to be deleted.
- Visitors’ session information (device, operating system, browser, referrer website and actions taken on this website) excluding any personally identifiable information, such as IP Addresses. These are stored securely in a self-hosted analytics platform and are never forwarded to any third party. This is used to improve the service.
Your rights and contacting us
Under data protection law, you have rights including:
- Right of access: You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.
- Right to rectification: You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.

- Right to restriction of processing: You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.
- Right to object to processing: You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
